Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) are powered by hydrogen. These cars produce no tailpipe emissions — as they only emit water vapor and warm air. Its power system is composed of cells that chemically combine hydrogen from the car’s tank and oxygen from the air to produce electricity. With a driving range of 300 to 400 miles on a single tank, FCEVs can go the distance.

Pros of Owning an EV

• More energy efficient: Energy efficiency refers to the amount of energy from the fuel source that is converted into actual energy for powering a vehicle. EVs are more energy efficient than conventional cars — converting 59 to 62 percent of energy into vehicle movement, while gas powered cars convert between 17 and 21 percent.
• Low maintenance: EVs generally require less upkeep than conventional cars. EV owners avoid having to pay for maintenance like; tune-ups, oil changes, cooling system flushes, and transmission servicing
• Reduce emissions: Emission reduction is a great reason to get an EV. Because they are fully electric, these vehicles don’t release tailpipe emissions into the atmosphere.

Cons of Owning an EV

• Less mileage range: On average, EVs have a shorter range than conventional cars — with a median range of 234 miles. Compared to a gas powered car that can travel upwards of 300 miles on a full tank of gas.
• More costly upfront: Electric vehicles are more expensive than conventional cars, so the initial payment can scare buyers away. However, if you can get past the sticker price, an EV can save you money in the long run — offsetting the cost.
• Charging time: For those who are impatient, an EV might not be the best choice for you. Fully recharging the car’s battery can take up to eight hours. And while there are fast changing stations, it will likely take at least 30 minutes to get a decent charge.
